20 Years of Interleague

Retired sports writer Jerry Green lambasts interleague play. This is my favorite bit:

This is the 20th season of interleague Major League Baseball played under conflicting rules and philosophies — the DH or no DH. I’m surprised that MLB, with is quest for variety in uniforms, didn’t force the teams to sew patches commemorating the 20th season of interleague in honor of Selig — Bud’s initials neatly etched onto the left sleeves.

What Bud Selig really did was remove the identity of the two leagues by consolidating everything under the commissioner’s office. There used to be league presidents with real power, league umpires, league balls, all the things that made the NL and AL noticeably different. When the teams met in the World Series or the All-Star game, you were watching not only two teams compete, but two ideas of how the game should be played. Selig removed all that.

So just do away with the leagues, create five six-team divisions, and rotate which divisions play the other two. There’s really no use in having two leagues if you don’t allow the leagues some autonomy.
