Games of the Day

Free agent additions take the mound as Yovani Gallardo leads the undefeated Orioles into Boston against David Price in the Red Sox home opener. Gallardo pitched a short but effective outing in his first game, allowing two hits and one run in five innings. Price walked two and struck out 10 in six innings to earn his first win of 2016.

The Braves look for their first win as they send Bud Norris against Max Scherzer in Washington. That Nationals hit Norris well, pinning a 5.01 ERA on him in eight games, five of them starts. Scherzer gave up two solo home runs to the Braves on opening day, the only runs he allowed in seven innings. Since the middle of July, 2015, Scherzer averaged 1.68 home runs per nine innings.

The Reds play the Cubs in Chicago’s home opener, with Brandon Finnegan taking on Jon Lester. Finnegan’s six innings with one walk and nine strikeouts in his 2016 debut is remarkable not for the Ks, but for the lack of walks. He’s been a bit wild at times in his career. Lester kept the bases clear in his first start, holding the Angles to a 2 for 19 with the bases empty.

Enjoy!
