Money Belt

The Giants decided to keep Brandon Belt around for a while:

San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt reached agreement Saturday on a $79 million, six-year contract that takes him through the 2021 season.

Belt’s deal includes his previous contract for this season, plus five more years.

Belt plays 2016 as a 28 year old. The Giants buy his free agency, but they also buy his decline. He’s a four WAR player, so he only needs to reach that level in three seasons to pay for the contract.

Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford are also signed through 2021, so this Giants core will be around for a while. Madison Bumgarner has options through 2019, and Johnny Cueto will be around into 2021 as well. That’s a very nice long-term core.
