Dan Harens gives an interview in which he talks about his anxiety about pitching, and how he wanted to quit whenever he pitched poorly. One person who helped was Zack Greinke, who dealt with similar issues:
Encouraged by new teammate Zack Greinke, Haren channeled his between-starts nerves into researching the weaknesses of hitters. Haren excelled early in the season, but got pounded in July. When he arrived at Angel Stadium on Aug. 6, he sensed the end.
It’s amazing found so much success without the extreme confidence possessed by most elite athletes.
