Overrating Leadership

Anthony French laments the non-tenders of Detroit players James McCann and Alex Wilson.

If the Tigers really cared about 2019, they would not be comfortable with the inexperienced tandem of John Hicks and Grayson Greiner at catcher, and they certainly wouldn’t let their most durable relief pitcher hit the free agent market.

But they don’t care much about next season. Of course, they cannot say that explicitly, but they haven’t exactly been hiding their intentions for quite time.

French goes on about the catchers:

Given the possibility that Greiner could match McCann’s production, aided by the return of Hicks and the addition of a yet-to-be-determined free agent for insurance, the Tigers decided it was time to move on.

If you read the article, one gets the idea that McCann was a decent hitter who was released after a down year. McCann, however, owns a .240/.288/.366 slash line in over 1500 plate appearance. That’s an offensive black hole. Hick and Greiner are likely to be better than that, although I don’t know how they will do defensively.

Leadership can be replaced. The Tigers offense should be better with McCann’s replacements.
