Improving Defensive Metrics

Jeff Fletcher talks to general managers about using StatCast data to more fully examine defense. There is a feeling the data will take some time to mature:

The problem is that even a whole season of StatCast data is probably not enough to make definitive judgments on defense.

“I think you have to let some time elapse before you have a lot of confidence in how you are going to associate that or implement that with any kind of decision making,” Eppler said. “As time goes on the more you will learn about it, the more confidence you’ll have. Does it help as an extra tool right now? Probably for some clubs and not as much for others.”

The great thing about StatCast for defense is that teams will be able to separate actual range, the ability to move to a ball, from positioning, the ability to be where a ball is hit. Both are important in defense, but the older measures that just relied on batted ball parameters could not capture that well.
