Rasmus Accepts

Colby Rasmus made history Thursday:

Outfielder Colby Rasmus agreed to accept Houston’s $15.8 million qualifying offer ahead of Friday’s deadline, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the team had not announced the move.

None of the 34 qualifying offers were accepted in the first three years of baseball’s current collective bargaining agreement and 20 more were made last week. The deadline is Friday 5 p.m. EST and among the players facing decisions are second baseman Daniel Murphy (Mets) and pitcher Marco Estrada (Blue Jays).

Rasmus is a very interesting case. He’s young for a free agent, and will play 2016 as a 29-year-old. He had two outstanding seasons, but some poor ones, too. I suspect he wanted to stay in Houston, and the qualifying offer was fair enough given his career. If he can build on 2015 and produce another high WAR in 2016, he’ll be in a much better position to demand a high-money, long-term deal.
