Playoffs Today

The Yankees and Astros play game two of the ALCS at 4 PM EDT Saturday afternoon. It’s another great pitching match-up, as Luis Severino takes on Justin Verlander. Severino’s post-season career now consists of one terrible start and one quality start. The commonality is that he allowed two home runs in each. The Yankees won both games, but Severino probably won’t get away with allowing long-balls to the Astros. Verlander does have a post-season history against the Yankees, although he has not faced them in that situation since 2012. His 2-0 record in four starts with a 3.57 ERA is good, however. This is his first time facing New York in 2017. Verlander had mixed results against Boston. He made both a start and a relief appearance. He gave up three runs in 8 2/3 innings, but he walked four while striking out only three.

The Cubs have not named a starter against the Dodgers. It will be an extremely well rested John Lackey, or Jose Quintana who pitched in game five of the NLDS. Quintana threw just 12 pitches in that game, so it was essentially a warm up session for him. Quintana is less likely to give up a home run against a powerful Dodgers lineup. The Dodgers, however, were 33-15 when a LHP started against them.

Whoever starts against them will face Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw is on his way to being the greatest pitcher of all time, but not in the post season. One big difference is home runs. For his regular season career, Kershaw allowed 0.6 HR per 9 IP. He more than doubled that in the post-season, 1.32 HR per 9 IP. He allowed four home runs against the Diamondbacks in his NLDS start, but held them to solo shots. We’ll see if the Cubs can do long-ball damage as well. The 2017 season was Kershaw’s worst for allowing home runs.

Enjoy!
