Astros Win

The Astros beat the Red Sox 7-2 on Saturday night in a 4:03 marathon that in one way was a well pitched game, and in another way was not. The teams combined for eight hits, but both starting pitchers, Chris Sale and Justin Verlander had an inning in which they lost the plate, walking and hitting batters. Both innings led to two runs and a mid-game 2-2 tie. All in all, 17 batters reached by a walk or hit by pitch in the game. In was also a sloppy game, as the winning run scored as an error on a double play ball led to a run, but both teams were not as sharp as I would have expected. The Astros did not blow the game open until the ninth inning, so it was a tension filled game without a lot of action.

I am now firmly in the pitch clock camp. It’s one thing for a pitcher to hold the ball with a man on base to try to disrupt base stealing, but Red Sox pitchers were doing that with no one on base to disrupt batter timing. I’ve seen the pitch clock in minor league games, and it makes no difference. It that’s what it takes to get a pitcher to throw the damn ball, so be it.
