Cheap Insurance

Why did the Yankees sign Chris Carter? Why not! He does two things well, hit home runs and draw walks. That’s it. He can’t run, he can’t field, and that makes him an under 1.0 WAR player. The Yankees, however, have two players in Greg Bird and Matt Holliday that have injury histories. Carter gives them a very low cost insurance policy against either of them coming up lame. Three and a half million is nothing for a player these days. Used correctly, Carter will help the team from the bench. If an injury bug hits, he is there to step into the lineup.

The Rob Deer type player isn’t highly valued right now, but the Yankees looked at what he could do and decided it might help.
