Dee is for Dollars

The Miami Marlins locked up Dee Gordon:

Gordon avoided salary arbitration and agreed to a $50 million, five-year contract with Miami, a person familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday. The person confirmed the deal to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made.

Gordon led the majors last season with 205 hits and 58 stolen bases, and he batted .333. He injured his thumb at midseason and missed 17 games, but still became the first player to lead the NL in average and stolen bases since Jackie Robinson in 1949.

Gordon is probably around a three-WAR player. He is a late bloomer, playing his first full year in 2014 at seasonal age 26, so he only has two years left in his prime. Also, with only two full years under his belt, there’s a lot of uncertainty about his ability. The Marlins may end up with a great deal here. If Gordon posts two four-WAR seasons, he pretty much earns the entire package. If he can be a steady three-WAR player, it gives the Marlins a very good player at a low cost, and salary flexibility for the rest of the team.
