The Cepedes Divide

I found it interesting that as Yoenis Cespedes helped the Mets to the World Series, the media seemed to think he was going to be the hottest free agent on the market. Instead, he remains unsigned, and teams seem to want to buy low on him:

Cespedes is not yet prepared to accept a short-term deal, a source recently told NY Post reporter Ken Davidoff (Jan. 20, 5:50 am). According to a Davidoff, a handful of baseball executives still believe he will eventually get a five-year deal in the $100 million range.

“We continue to have conversations with Cespedes’s agent,” Mets GM Sandy Alderson told season-ticket holders Tuesday. “That’s all I can say at this time.”

FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal wants the Mets to cave and offer Cespedes a five-year, $120 million deal with a two-year-opt out and a ton of deferred money (Jan. 19).

“If the Mets don’t do it, some other team will,” he says.

Given his three-year 4.1 fWAR average, Cespedes should be worth $126 million over five years. The problem is that the slugger has baggage; his former teams were more than happy to let him go. On top of that, 2015 was a bit of an outlier. The $100 million for five years offer means teams see him more as a 3.1 WAR player rather than a 4.1 WAR player. The Mets are a very fiscally responsible team. I’m betting they don’t go to $120 million.
