Fister of Fury

The Astros sign Doug Fister to a one-year, $7 million deal. That means they expect him to produce less than one WAR.

“The choice to come here was driven from top down,” Fister said Thursday. “I know we’re trying to win a World Series here, and that’s your ultimate goal and that’s why you come to the ballpark every day. But as soon as you start breaking it down, the experience in their pitching staff, the youthfulness in the defense, and the way they carry themselves … to me taking care of the 25 guys next to you is most important.”

Fister suffered an interesting two-year decline. His strikeout rate fell in 2014 from around 7.0 per nine innings to about 5.5 per nine innings. His ERA rose, but on a good Nationals team he was able to win. In 2015, his walk rate rose (although it was still great), and his home run rate went way up. The latter two were blamed on an injury, but the two year poor K rate should be a concern. If he gets his home run rate down, however, he’ll be a useful starter.
