Upton to the Tigers

The latest news is that Justin Upton agreed to a contract with the Tigers:

Multiple reports Monday night say the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a six-year contract with free-agent outfielder Justin Upton.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today was the first to report that the deal had been agreed to in principle. Nightengale reported that the deal will be worth $132.75 million over six seasons and that Upton can opt out of the deal after two seasons.

There is that opt-out again.

Upton is in his prime, playing 2016 at seasonal age 28. I estimate his salary for the length of his contract at $133.7 million, with a 10% decline not kicking in until the third year. At that point, he may no longer be with the Tigers.

It’s a great signing for the Tigers. Upton and Miguel Cabrera give the team two great bats in the middle of the lineup. We’ll see, however, if it is enough for the team to contend in a fairly strong division. Health for the rest of the potential stars will matter a great deal.
