Even Series, Evenly Matched

The Cubs and Indians split the first two games of the World series, both teams taking a lopsided victory. Overall, however, the stats for the two teams are extremely similar. The Indians produced a .219/.324/.375 slash line. The Cubs produced a .225/.321/.310 slash line. Both teams hit for a low average while drawing a high number of walks. The Cubs walked ten times, while the Indians walked nine times with a hit batter. The Cubs struck out 23 times, the Indians 21. Cleveland is producing more power, with six extra-base hits to Chicago’s five. The Cubs do not have a home run while the Indians hit two.

Neither team hits well with men in scoring position. The Cubs are batting .174/.240/.174, while the Indians come in at .154/.343/.385. Both these games could have been closer if those batting averages were higher. It looks like both teams are willing to issue a walk rather than give batters something to hit in that situation. Neither team is getting much from their 1-2 hitters, but down order is doing well. Both teams are getting excellent production from their catchers.

One difference is hitting with two out. The Indians are hitting .370 to the Cubs .208. Two out hitting hasn’t helped Cleveland much, however. There usually isn’t anyone on, since they hit poorly with less than two out, and getting a hit with two out leaves little time for a rally.

The series moves to Wrigley Field on Friday, and we’ll see if the two teams perform at the same level in the same game for a close contest.
