Rays Sign Garcia

The Rays signed former White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia.

Avisail Garcia and the Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to terms on a one-year contract that would pay the former Chicago White Sox outfielder $3.5 million next season.

With incentives, the deal could be worth more if the 27-year-old — one season removed from being an AL All-Star — rebounds from a disappointing 2018.

Garcia, who’s coming off arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, hit a career-high 19 home runs last season but slumped to .236 with 49 RBIs in 93 games after batting a career-best .330 with 18 homers and 80 RBIs in 136 games in 2017, when he was an All-Star.

Career-best is a bit of an understatement. He posted an outlier season, accumulating a 4.6 rWAR when he had never reach one WAR before. He regressed to his norm very quickly, with his BA and OBP dropping nearly 100 points compared to 2017.

Note the Rays are paying him for his career numbers, not his 2017 season. The smart money is on him rebounding from his 2017 low, but closer to his career numbers. The upside might be that his knee was bothering him all year, and a healthier Garcia will improve over his career averages. The Rays might have figured out why he was so good in 2017, and will work to bring him back to that level. It’s a typical Rays signing, where there is plenty of upside that they can trade in July if it materializes.
