Reviewing Perdomo

The San Diego Union-Tribune continues its series on the Padres roster with a review of Luis Perdomo.

STAT TO NOTE
8.6 – The average launch angle against Perdomo in 2018, according to Statcast, up from 0.4 degrees in 2017. Not coincidently, opponents’ average ballooned from .283 in 2017 to .323 in 2018 and his ERA jumped from 4.67 to 7.05.

One would think that playing in a tough home run park like PETCO would make a high launch angle less destructive, but Perdomo got hit even worse than in 2017. In fact, given the high batting average against him, his three-year slugging percentage allowed is not that bad.

Perdomo comes on my radar, however, due to his ability to bring batters to the top of the Beat the Streak leader boards. His strikeout rate is rather low given today’s standards, and balls in play against him just seem to fall for hits. The first inning slash line against him stands at .320/.371/.494, so he’s not fooling the good hitters.

Perdomo is actually a good candidate for the pitcher following the opener. If he makes the roster this season, we’ll see if the Padres try him in that role.
