I believe this is progress. Walk Like a Sabermetrician looks at hitting by lineup slot in 2015:
#2 hitters outperformed #5 hitters in both leagues, although the #5 spots remain home to a higher ISO than #2.
The Lineup Analysis Tool tends to put the best hitters in the one and two slot. Teams should want a very good hitter second, especially in the AL where the #9 hitter might not be terrible. The five slot should be a power slot, which data shows. Teams still waste their best hitters in the three slot, but one step at a time.
