Harper Versus Kershaw

After giving up two hits in the seventh inning, Clayton Kershaw faces Bryce Harper as tying run, the Dodgers leading the Nationals 5-2. Harper works the count full and fouls off two pitches. He took some close pitches for balls. He finally takes a pitch low and outside, and draws the walk to load the bases.

It was a classic battle, although the outcome wasn’t very classic. Then again, two champions played to a draw, and that’s okay.

Kershaw leaves the game having walked two (Harper both times) and stuck out 11. It’s an impressive performance on short rest, especially if the bullpen can strand the runners.

Update: Pedro Baez comes on in relief, and hits Jayson Werth with the first pitch. The Dodgers now lead 5-3.
