Pricing Free Agents

Dave Cameron makes the case that the price for free agent players won’t go through the roof this winter:

But, as much as there is a supply shortage of upper-end talent in the free agent market this winter, there is one reason to think that prices might not be as outrageous as some expect. That reason? A reduced supply of free agents also means reduced demand for roster spots to be filled.

Well, maybe. Players get cut, retire, and fall out of the majors due to injury. There’s always going to be some turnover. If three teams all decide they need a veteran starter and Ivan Nova is it, he will get the money.

On the other hand, there are four quality pitchers available at the closer position, rated by MLB Trade Rumors all in the top 11. It would probably behoove teams who want to buy a closer to shop early, when the pivot to one of the other three can be used a leverage to reduce the cost. In fact, any team that wants to buy a closer should sign Mark Melancon now, so competitors are forced to spend more money.
