The Diamondbacks hired Torey Lovullo as their new manager.
Lovullo, whose hiring was announced Friday, had been considered a leading candidate for the job after Red Sox assistant general manager Mike Hazen was hired as Diamondbacks general manager.
The Red Sox were 50-62 when John Farrell became ill and Lovullo took over the team on Aug. 11, 2016. They went 28-22 the rest of the way under Lovullo, and carried those winning ways into 2016, winning the AL East. I suspect if the Red Sox had really faltered in 2016, Lovullo would have become the manager, so Boston’s winning worked to the Diamondbacks advantage.
