The Cubs beat the Indians 8-7 in ten innings to win game seven and the 2016 World Series. Down three games to one, Chicago took three in a row, the last two on the road to break their 108 year championship drought. It was not easy, as Joe Maddon‘s relief plans backfired twice, leading to the need for extra innings. To paraphrase Bill James, Aroldis Chapman won a game he should have saved, but that’s better than losing it.
There were so many dramatic moments. Dexter Fowler led off the game with a home run. David Ross and Rajai Davis hit unlikely home runs against star relievers. There was a wild pitch that scored two runs, errors and great defense.
It was a great series, and neither team deserved to lose. I suspect both will be back at some point in the next few years.
