Post-Season Scoring

The Cubs have scored seven runs in the NLCS, all seven runs driven in with the six home runs the team hit. That’s as high a percentage of runs on home runs as a team can achieve. For the entire post-season, however, the Cubs have scored 24 runs on ten home runs, or 41.7% of their runs. That’s actually low for teams that appeared in the 2017 post-season so far. Washington (70%), Arizona (68.2%), and Cleveland (55.6%) are all out of the playoffs. Only the Yankees with 27 of their 50 runs coming on homers (54%) are still in the hunt among the teams with 50% or more of their runs on homers.

Unless a team hits a lot of home runs, depending on the Long ball doesn’t lift the offense very much. That’s what the Cubs are finding out in the NLCS. The Dodgers are happy to allow a few solo home runs. Los Angeles is able to execute a mix of offense, and their 5.3 runs per game is the best among the remaining teams.

Keeping the bases empty, and limiting rallies covers for the home run weakness. The Dodgers pitching staff has been much better than the Cubs pitching staff at that, which is why the Dodgers lead the series 3-1.
