Keeping Kershaw

The Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw agreed to extend the deadline for Kershaw to decide on opting out of his contract. I see that as a very positive development in the Dodgers keeping their pitching ace in the fold:

Although Kershaw had carefully avoided disclosing anything publicly that would indicate his intentions, Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, said after Sunday’s loss that Kershaw had expressed his desire to stay.

“He says he wants to be a Dodger,” Friedman said. “We want him to be a Dodger. That’s all I really know at this point.”

One of the downsides of free agency is uprooting your personal life. I suspect the Kershaw family is rooted in the Los Angeles area now. The Dodgers have enough money to make Kershaw happy. A deadline extension usually means the negotiations are going well, and the two sides just need more time to iron out issues. We will find out Friday.
