Logan Runs West

The Dodgers acquired second baseman Logan Forsythe from the Rays for pitching prospect Jose De Leon.

Forsythe, 29, averaged 18 home runs the last two seasons with a .791 on-base plus slugging percentage. As a right-handed hitter, he provides balance for a lineup stacked with left-handed hitters. He is guaranteed $6.75 million through 2017, with an $8.5 million club option for 2018.

De Leon, 24, posted a 6.35 earned-run average in four starts for the Dodgers last season, but a strong performance in triple-A Oklahoma City still placed him near the top of the team’s prospect list.

I’m not sure what to make of Forsythe. He posted solid offense his last two years, but he kind of looks like someone who might have a brief peak. According to FanGraphs, he does not look like a great defender. The Dodgers seem to be getting an older, experienced second baseman on the decline, but one that comes cheaply. Color me unimpressed.

De Leon’s minor league numbers are outstanding, with 12.1 K per 9 IP and just 2.7 BB per 9 IP. Those numbers held up very well at AAA. I would not be surprised if in five years Dodgers fans were complaining about this trade.
