Padres Health Care

The Padres changed their healthcare provider after 36 years. I wasn’t quite sure why this was a big deal until I got to this part of the story:

“Obviously, with the long-term relationship with Scripps, it was really a difficult decision,” Preller said. “There were two really good medical groups the decision came down to. Ultimately, the separator for us with UCSD was their research capabilities. As we continue to look into innovation in different areas of baseball operations, including player care, we thought their research and development component would serve us well.”

The switch in providers is not believed to be a result of the 30-day suspension Preller served after a Major League Baseball investigation determined that the Padres had withheld medical information from the Boston Red Sox. Both Padres ownership and Preller have publicly defended themselves, saying there was no intent to deceive other clubs. Preller has vowed that the Padres will be “best in class” in complying with the league’s record-keeping guidelines.

Preller remains under the microscope.
