TArenado of Money

The Rockies and Nolan Arenado avoid two years of arbitration battles with a $29.5 million contract.

The Rockies all-star avoided arbitration Friday by signing a two-year deal worth $29.5 million. The contract leaves Arenado with one year of arbitration remaining for the 2019 season, after which he’s scheduled to become a free agent. Arenado will make $11.75 million in 2017 and $17.75 million in 2018.

“Nolan earned his contract and the club treated him right,” said Arenado’s agent, Joel Wolfe.

Arenado looks like a five-war player, so he may be worth as much as $40 million a year on the open market. The Rockies are paying him a little under 40% of that two year value. If he maintains that level, I suspect you’ll see another two year deal with options at more than double the salary.

I’m a little surprised the Rockies didn’t add two more years to the contract right now. That would take him through arbitration and his first year of free agency, and give the Rockies his entire prime. Maybe Arenado is being smart, figuring he can earn more money with shorter contracts as long as he stays healthy.
