Of Note

David Laurila posts his latest Sunday notes column. Laurila is quickly becoming the Peter Gammons of the Baseball Blogoshpere. Here’s a great Bud Black quote:

“Every organization talks about their mission statements,” said Black. “They talk about the physical component of the player, the fundamental component of the player, and the mental component of the player. The analytics world bases everything on the physical. What does he do? But the mental component is huge. At Coors, mentally tough players are required, particularly on the pitching side. As an organization, we’re very aware of that.”

I remember Bill James talking about this type of thing in regards to Fenway in the 1980s. At that time, it was a park where no lead was safe. James thought the Red Sox should let their pitchers go longer in games when they got in trouble, as taking them out just reinforced failure. Instead, Roger Clemens showed that a strikeout pitcher could survive in Fenway.
