Farrell Fired

John Farrell manages the Red Sox no more:

The Boston Red Sox have fired manager John Farrell after the team’s second straight loss in the AL Division Series.

The Red Sox announced the move Wednesday less than 48 hours after they eliminated from the playoffs with a 5-4 loss to the Houston Astros. Farrell’s contract had been scheduled to run through the 2018 season.

This firing might come two seasons too late. Torey Lovullo managed very well at the end of the 2015 season:

Under Lovullo, the Red Sox went 28-20 after a 50-64 start. It wasn’t just that they won, but how. Their young players excelled. Struggling pitchers found their footing. The strong finish bred optimism that the offseason additions of David Price and Co. merely cemented.

It would have looked very bad to fire someone returning from battling cancer, however. The Red Sox went on to have a good year in 2016, and a good year in 2017. Now Farrell is gone, and Lovullo did a masterful job of turning around the Diamondbacks.
