Players of the Month

Since October only had one day, I’m including the last day of the season in September.

Before I looked at the list of top OBPs, I thought Aaron Judge would be an easy pick, but Jose Ramirez is equally good. Judge posted a .311/.463/.889 slash line compared to .407/.465/.895 for Ramirez. Basically, Ramirez was amassing his huge OBP via hits instead of walks. Judge hit a lot more home runs, 15 to 9, but Ramirez wins extra-base hits 23 to 22. The main drawback to Ramirez is that he only played 23 games compared to 27 for Judge. On the other hand, he accumulated those numbers in only 23 games! Judge does cream him in runs (29-22) and RBI (32 to 21).

When on gets around to looking at slugging percentage, J.D. Martinez pops to the top of the charts. He hit 16 home runs and eight doubles, and drove in 36 runs. All three were a big reason their teams made the playoffs. I will not wimp out and declare a tie, however. Ramriez’s slash line wins the day for me, Jose Ramirez of the Indians in the Baseball Musings Offensive Player of the Month for September 2017.

It turned out to be just as difficult picking a pitcher. Stephen Strasburg beat Corey Kluber in ERA 0.83 to 0.84, with Michael Clevinger coming in at 0.94. Justin Verlander solidified the Astros rotation with a 5-0 record and a 1.06 ERA in the month.

When you look away from the averages, however, Kluber pitched a lot more than the other, 43 innings. In that time he allowed just three walks and three home runs while striking out 50. Corey Kluber is the Baseball Musings pitcher of the Month for September 2017.
