Playoffs Today

The 2017 ALCS gets underway in Houston at 8 PM EDT with the Yankees sending Masahiro Tanaka against the Astros and Dallas Keuchel. Tanaka and Keuchel squared off in the 2015 AL Wild Card game. Tanaka allowed two runs in five inning and took the loss, as Keuchel pitched six shutout innings. Keuchel had a much better game, walking one and striking out seven, while Tanaka walked three and struck out three while allowing two home runs. With Tanaka’s second playoff start under his belt, a seven inning scoreless start against the Indians, his ERA stands at 1.50 over twelve innings of work.

Tanaka’s regular season record against the Astros is not pretty, having pitched just 17 1/3 innings in four starts, giving up 20 runs and a total of nine home runs. That’s good for a 10.38 ERA, 9.00 in Houston.

Keuchel owns a 2.29 post-season ERA in four appearances, striking out 21 batters in 19 2/3 innings. In his three starts, he is even better, with a 0.96 ERA with all 21 strikeouts. Since 2015, a time in which the teams took similar paths, Keuchel pretty much shutdown the Yankees, 4-1 in five starts with a 0.98 ERA, 36 2/3 innings, 40 K, 6 BB, and no home runs allowed.

This looks like it could be an excellent pitching match-up.

Enjoy!
