The Relief Starters Game

Although Rick Porcello and Charlie Morton started the game, the decisions went to two unusual relievers, Justin Verlander getting the win for Houston while Chris Sale took the loss for Boston. It looked like it might go the other way at first as Verlander gave up a home run to the first batter to give Boston a 3-2 lead. Sale ran into trouble after four scoreless inning. A home run tied the game, but Craig Kimbrel was unable to hold the tie, and Sale gets credit for the run. Then Kimbrel could not hold the one run lead, making Rafael Devers‘s inside-the-park home run in the ninth moot. Sale got the loss, but Kimbrel deserved it.

The Astros now get three days to rest as they wait to see who they play. They’ll be able to go with Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander in games one and two.

Congratulations to the Astros on a great series win.
