Down Goes Frazier

Another free agent signs as the Mets ink Todd Frazier:

Frazier turns 32 next week. He hit a combined .213 with 27 home runs and 76 RBIs last season for the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees.

A two-time All-Star, Frazier hit 35 homers for Cincinnati in 2015 and 40 for the White Sox in 2016.

The Mets still have captain David Wright on the roster, but the longtime third baseman’s future is in doubt after injuries and a chronic back condition limited him to 75 regular-season games over the last three years. He hasn’t played in the big leagues since May 2016.

At least the Mets found someone who will be decent at the position. Frazier produced 10 WAR over the last three seasons, and I’d expect him to produce around 5.7 WAR over the two year, $17 million deal, or about $3 million per WAR. The cost per expected free agent WAR has dropped as fast as the value of bitcoin.

The Mets continue to look old, as it appears Asdrubal Cabrera will move to second. Most of the opening day starting lineup will be on the wrong side of 30.

It strikes me that the people hurt the most by this are next season’s free agent class. If the price of a WAR keeps dropping, Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, and Clayton Kershaw may not break the record for a free-agent contract.
