JD Martinez is a bit miffed at the Red Sox offer:
According to The Athletic, Martinez has both told people he is willing to hold out for his price and he is tired of waiting on the Red Sox, who have stuck to their reported $125 million offer they gave him earlier in the offseason.
It’s an intriguing situation as Martinez may be worth more than $125 million, but there simply isn’t a market out there this winter to pay him more.
Martinez’s agent, Scott Boras, is saying the price for his client is seven years and $210 million after he hit .303 with 45 home runs and 104 RBIs in 2017.
Martinez earned 10.6 WAR over the last three seasons, or about 3.5 WAR per season. Over the next five seasons, I estimate Martinez would produce 14.3 WAR over the next five seasons (10% fall off every season), which means the Red Sox are willing to pay him $8.7 million per WAR, rather generous in the current environment. Over the next seven seasons, Martinez should produce about 18.3 WAR, meaning Boras is asking for about $11.5 million per WAR. That’s really high. Martinez should take the money while it’s still on the table. If Boston looks at the Todd Frazier deal, they might decide to lower, not raise their offer.
