The Limits of Electronics

I’m watching the Olympics women’s curling match between China and the US. The handles of the stones have red and green lights that indicate if the stone was released correctly. If the stone is release before the hogline, the light turns green and and the shot is good. If the curler contacts the handle past that line, a red line comes on indicating a penalty.

On the second stone of the eighth end for China, the red light came on. The Chinese claimed they released the stone properly. The officials took the stone back to the hogline and tested it, and indeed the red light was coming on incorrectly. Something to keep in mind when the robot umpires take over.

The US women are playing well. It looks like they will beat China easily, winning 10-3 in the eighth end. That would make them 4-3 in the round robin, in which the top four teams advance to the finals. Unlike the men, the US women are making shots when they count.
