The Random Evil Player program selected Dustin Garneau for the next review. Garneau is a light-hitting catcher who came up for the Rockies, but is now playing for the Athletics after being acquired via waivers in August of 2017.
Garneau’s strength as a hitter is his power. Twenty two of his 48 career hits went for extra bases, mostly doubles. It was not a Coors effect as he hit better on the road than at home. He hit .178/.239/.277 at Coors in 109 PA, .192/.264/.320 overall.
When a catcher hits that poorly, he should be good defensively. Baseball Reference gives him a 1.1 defensive WAR in just 87 games. FanGraphs also shows a positive contribution on defense. He is what is known as a great handler of pitchers.
