Playoffs Today

The World Series moves back to Cleveland as the Cubs face elimination for the second time, and the Indians stare at their first World Championship since 1948. Jake Arrieta takes on Josh Tomlin.

Arrieta pitched okay this post season. His strike out and walk numbers are good, and his two home runs allowed came in his start against the Dodgers. He has not gone deep in games, however, so the few runs he allowed give him a 3.78 ERA. Teams have loaded up on left-handed batters against Arrieta as he faced 52 LHB, 15 RHB. The strategy didn’t work well, however, as lefties hit .188/.231/.333 against the defending Cy Young Award winner, righties .333/.375/.533. During the regular season, he was slightly better against RHB.

Tomlin failed to go deep in games also, with just 15 1/3 innings in three starts. He gets out of the game before he gets in trouble, however, sporting a 1.76 ERA. Tomlin walked four batters, a perfectly good rate, but high compared to the regular season. He upped his strikeout games, however, fanning 11 batters. An extreme contact pitcher, he’s missing more bats in this World Series run. Teams have not stacked LHB against him, but Tomlin destroyed those he faced with a .100/143/.150 slash line allowed.

Enjoy!
