The 2017 series on team offense continues with the Pirates. The Pirates finished sixth in the National League and thirteenth in the majors in 2016 with 4.50 runs scored per game.
I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Clint Hurdle order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. For the pitchers, slot, I used the actual values for the Pirates in 2016. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):
Best lineup: 4.67
Probable lineup: 4.43
Worst lineup: 4.13
Regressed lineup: 4.20
Meh. I have no idea why Gregory Polanco is fifth, or why the Pirates think Josh Harrison is their best bet at the top of the order. I understand Jung-ho Kang slotted in lower in the order due to his legal troubles cutting into his spring training.
There’s not a lot of power anywhere in this lineup, so I would just list them in order of decreasing OBP, with the catcher Cervelli batting ninth. I don’t see this offense improving much over last season.
You can follow the data for the series in this Google spreadsheet.
