Sad Hand

Colorado’s 2017 free agent strategy was dealt a blow on Sunday:

The Colorado Rockies lost one of their biggest offseason acquisitions when Ian Desmond was hit by a pitch Sunday, breaking his left hand.

Desmond was plunked by Cincinnati right-hander Rookie Davis with a 93 mph fastball in the fourth inning of the Rockies’ 9-8 loss in spring training. The team says the preliminary diagnosis on Desmond is a left hand fracture, and he will see a specialist on Monday.

That’s bad luck for both the Desmond and the Rockies. Gerardo Parra is the backup at first, but he doesn’t hit like a first baseman either. First base should not be a problem; the Rockies should have a slugger somewhere in their system who can catch the ball and take advantage of Coors Field. They wanted better infield defense with Desmond, and that appears to be gone for the moment.
