Cardinals Chemistry

The Cardinals seem to be spending a lot of time on team chemistry this spring.

The Cardinals have struck a more inclusive, relaxed and revitalized vibe this spring, from music on the field to those “opt-in” independent (and voluntary) work stations and throughout the clubhouse. One of the surest signs of how they’ve taken lessons from last year and applied it to this year was Maxwell’s visit Tuesday. Maxwell was a mentor for Matheny before they ever met, and Matheny has pollinated the clubhouse and his coaching staff with many of Maxwell’s books on leadership. Last year, Maxwell came to speak to the Cardinals’ leadership group of veterans and a “sprinkling in” of young players. Or, as one player put it, “a select few.”

Some teammates not included took note. That moment slipped into a larger pool of others last spring and gave the club a disjointed feel, on the field and in the clubhouse. Toward the end of spring, meetings were held, leadership groups convened and differences discussed in conversations that, Matheny would later say, got “raw.”

The clouds have cleared this spring.

In five years managing, Matheny owns a 461-349 record, .569, and never had a losing season. That’s very impressive. I highly doubt poor chemistry was the reason for the Cardinals winning just 86 games. There is always room for improvement, however. It could be Matheny became a bit complacent last season, a year when it turned out the talent on the field wasn’t enough to make the playoffs. It’s good that Matheny is trying to grow as a manager.
