Team Offense, Chicago Cubs

The 2017 series on team offense continues with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs finished second in the National League and third in the majors in 2016 with 4.99 runs scored per game.

I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Joe Maddon order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections. For the pitchers, slot, I used the actual values for the Cubs in 2016. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

Best lineup: 5.06
Probable lineup: 4.89
Worst lineup: 4.52
Regressed lineup: 4.50

Notice that the Cubs and the LAT are in agreement on the groupings of the top and bottom of the order. All twenty top batting orders put Ben Zobrist, Kyle Schwarber, Kris Bryant, and Anthony Rizzo in the first four slots, although none of them in that order. The LAT likes Jason Heyward batting ninth, and don’t be surprised to see Heyward or Addison Russell hitting there from time to time.

Note, too, that this lineup is full of upside. Schwarber hardly played in the 2017 season, going 0 for 4 with a walk. Heyward had an off year. Five of the starting eight will play 2017 as 25 years old or younger, which means the majority of the order should show improvement. The Cubs offensive Juggernaut is just getting started.

You can follow the data for the series in this Google spreadsheet.
