Gone, Baez

Someone’s swinging Lord, BOOMbyya!

Javier Baez provided the only offense of the game as the his home run in the eighth inning was the only stain on a masterful pitching duel as the Cubs beat the Giants 1-0. Johnny Cueto out-pitched Jon Lester in many ways. Both pitched eight innings, Cueto giving up three hits and no walks while striking out 10. Lester allowed five hits and no walks while striking out five. The type of the hits matter, and no fielders can stop a home run.

I am extremely impressed with Baez’s home run swing:

Watch the closeup of the swing on the replay. It’s a text book swing, the hips leading his torso into an explosion of power with a perfect upper cut follow through.

Thirty one of the 52 runs scored so far in the post-season were driven in by home runs, 59.6%. During the regular season, that percentage was 40.2%. The general good pitching so far means teams need the long ball to cross the plate.
