If you’ve ever spent time training with me, it’s all but guaranteed that you have heard me preach about the importance of hard work and dedication. I talk about these qualities so often that I probably sound like a broken record. My ramblings about hard work and dedication aren’t by accident though. I don’t repeat myself because I have forgotten that I’ve already discussed something. I repeat myself because these topics are so important to me. Hard work and dedication are qualities that can’t be discussed enough.
With that in mind, I will use this entry to discuss an aspect of the grind that is often ignored.
Considering the Risks
Few will argue against the significance of hard work and dedication. The question though is what happens when you give everything you have and find out that your best wasn’t enough. Has your hard work been wasted? Would you have been better served to not invest so much time and energy towards achieving your goals?
In the video below, I attempt to answer these questions.
My Own Experience
As stated within the video, I don’t pretend to have all of the answers. I can only share my opinion based on the experiences I’ve had throughout life. With that said, there’s no doubt that some of my own regrets have molded my stance on the subject.
Many years ago, I was a young athlete who made some poor decisions outside of the gym. I got myself into trouble and ultimately squandered my athletic career. The result of my teenage ignorance was a long period of regret. For many years, I had sleepless nights where I looked back at my life and wondered what could have been. I’ll never know what it feels like to honestly say that I gave my sport everything I had. And it’s for that reason that I constantly remind my athletes to avoid making the same mistakes that I’ve already made.
Final Thoughts
I wish I could go back in time and talk to my younger self from 25 years ago. Unfortunately, that’s not possible. Perhaps that is a blessing in disguise though. If I hadn’t made the mistakes that I made, I probably wouldn’t be here discouraging others from doing the same.
In summary, you will never regret doing the best that you can. Regardless of the outcome, you will always come out a better version of yourself. Thus, if there’s something that you want to achieve, you owe it to yourself to give everything you have. Life doesn’t last forever and there are no any rewind buttons.
Pursue your passions while you still can.
