The Mets beat the Phillies 5-3 early Saturday afternoon, ending the chance of a three-way tie for the two wild card slots in the NL. Due to the Mets holding the tie breaker against the Giants, the win also gives New York home field for the wild card game. The best the Giants can do now is tie the Mets in the standings.
The Cardinals stay alive in the wild card race with a come from behind, 4-3 win over the Pirates. Pittsburgh scored three in the first inning, but the Cardinals pitchers threw eight shutout innings to allow the team to come back, scoring the winning run in the eighth on a Jedd Gyorko home run.
The Giants maintianed their one game lead over the Cardinals, however, with a 3-0 defeat of the Dodgers. All three runs came off Clayton Kershaw, two of them unearned. Ty Blach continued his brief but excellent rookie season with eight shutout innings, allowing three hits and one walk, striking out six. That lowered his ERA to 1.06 in a total of 17 innings.
The Dodgers loss also gives the Nationals the home field advantage in the NLDS. So we know the Nationals host the Dodgers, while the Cubs host the eventual wild card winner. If the Giants lose and the Cardinals win on Sunday, there will be a one-game playoff on Monday to determine the second wild card team.
