Playoffs Today

The NLCS plays game two as Clayton Kershaw leads the Dodgers against the Cubs and Kyle Hendricks. If you draw the ERA qualification line at 149 innings, Kershaw and Hendricks finished 1-2 in the NL in ERA for the 2016 regular season. In 41 fewer innings, Kershaw still managed to strike out two more batters than Hendricks, a big reason Kershaw’s ERA was 0.44 runs lower. Kershaw’s walk rate was 1/3 of Hendricks’s walk rate, and Hendricks had a great walk rate. Kershaw’s HR rate was lower than Hendricks’s HR rate, and Hendricks’s HR rate was excellent. This is an outstanding matchup.

Once again, Kerhsaw’s post-season stats are very strange. He pitched 12 1/3 innings in the NLDS against the Nationals. He struck out 19 and walked three, not allowing a home run. He was also charged with eight runs for a 5.84 ERA. When the Nationals made contact, they tended to get hits, 15 for 33 on contact (including two sacrifice flies). During the regular season, his BABIP was .254, so there’s some evidence he is not 100%. I’m somewhat surprised Kershaw is starting game two; I thought the Dodgers might want to give him more rest after two stressful games.

Hendricks pitched extremely well at home this season. His 1.32 ERA was best at home among all pitchers with at least 81 innings at home in 2016. In fact, the four main Cubs starters were all in the top ten, as Wrigley played as a bit of a pitchers park in 2016. Hendricks allowed just four of his 15 home runs at home.

Enjoy!
