Slugging 1.000

Eric Thames doubled his first time up for the Brewers Tuesday night to raise his slugging percentage to 1.023. Twelve of his 18 hits have gone for extra bases, five doubles and seven home runs. Even early in the season, that’s a wow.

Slugging percentage is not a probability like OBP or batting average. It is a measure of distance, the average distance around the bases in an at bat. A player with a .500 slugging percentage is very good. That player would on average be half way to first base every at bat. Thames, on average, is beyond first base on every at bat.

Another way of looking at slugging percentage relates to RBI. The farther distance a batter moves himself, the farther along base runners will move. That’s why big sluggers usually rack up the big RBI totals, they can score runners from first.

The Brewers lead the Cubs 3-0 in the top of the third innings.
