Strategic Sixth

The Mets are planning on using an irregular sixth starter:

The report details that the Mets plan to enact a six-man rotation prior to Wheeler’s arrival, and might even use spot starters to fill out the expanded rotation:

Alderson said spot starters will be used even during the first half of the season. Sean Gilmartin or Logan Verrett, depending on who makes the Opening Day roster, could be used in that capacity during the season’s early months.

Alderson actually did something similar with the Athletics in 1990 and 1989. In both cases, they used Curt Young as a spot starter to keep their top four pitchers fresh. That allowed Bob Welch to get enough starts to go 27-6 in 1990.

That was a prelude to going full-five man. Don’t be surprised to see the Mets be the first team to go full six-man at this point.

This also assumes the Mets stay healthy. If two or three pitchers drop, the Mets have the depth to weather those injuries, but they won’t be able to use a six-man rotation.
