The Arrieta Record

Jake Arrieta set a record by settling with the Cubs for $10.7 million.

Arrieta has agreed to a $10.7 million, one-year contract for the highest one-year deal for a pitcher eligible for arbitration for the second time.

A person familiar with the negotiations disclosed the agreement on Friday night. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been announced by the team.

Arrieta, who turns 30 in March, had a breakout season last year, helping the Cubs to an NL wild card. The NL Cy Young Award winner finished with a 22-6 record and a 1.77 ERA, easily cruising past most of his previous career highs.

That was quite the raise, up from $3.6 million after a 5 WAR season in 2013. This salary seems a bit low to me. The rule of thumb is that a player gets about 60% of his free-agent value in second year arbitration, which I believe would be closer to $18 million. I suspect that a poor 2012 season and age is keeping his salary down.

Arrieta will be an interesting free agent if he hits the market before the 2018 season. As an older pitcher, he’ll be on the decline. He may be better off signing an extension with the Cubs now, as his window for making tons of money may close quickly.
