Games of the Day

Cesar Vargas comes to see and conquer the Chicago Cubs as the Padres face Jon Lester. Vargas has yet to win in three starts despite a 1.10 ERA. With a .343 opposition OBP, he’s put on a ton of runners. They don’t go very far, however, as opponents are slugging just .316 against him. Lester struck out 38 in his first 40 innings of 2016, helping him to a 1.58 ERA. Opponents are just 4 for 27 against him with runners in scoring position. (The two were rained out on Monday).

On a night of very bad pitching, the best AL match-up appears to by the Rays at the Mariners, with Drew Smyly facing Wade Miley. Smyly blows batters away with 47 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings, walking just eight. He should be better than 1-3, but the Rays scored more than three runs just once in his starts. Miley also walked just eight in 38 innings, but his lower strikeout rate leads to a .288 opponent BA.

Enjoy!
