Weekly Look at Offense

Through five weeks of the season, 2016 offense is just a hair ahead of 2015 at the same point in time. The 2015 season saw 8.48 runs per game, while 2016 comes in at 8.51 runs per game. The week by week graph of the two seasons show week five was nearly identical to week five in 2015, as the dots are on top of each other.

Nothing much has changed. The reason for the higher offense remains the same. There are many more home runs and walks than at the same point in 2015. In two fewer games, MLB generated 111 more home runs, 0.24 per game. Walks are up 0.42 per games, and other hits are down 0.33 per game. That’s probably due to the higher strikeout rate, 16.0 per game versus 15.0 per game through five weeks of 2015. Whatever was done to reign in Ks in 2015 has disappeared in 2016. Pitchers are fooling batters, and batters are compensating by swinging for the fences.
